St. Xavier High School’s Austin Clemons a University of Louisville signee who was considered a top candidate for Kentucky’s Mr. Baseball award will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
St. X coach Andy Porta said Clemons received confirmation from doctors about the tear Tuesday after a series of incidents with the knee.
Clemons, a catcher and shortstop, batted .510 as a junior with 13 doubles, 37 runs scored and 29 stolen bases. Porta said Clemons had struggled a bit to open this season as opposing pitchers gave him little to hit.
wholesale jerseys “He was pressing a bit but for the last week or so he had really started to come out of it and be the ‘Clem’ of old,” the coach said.
Porta said Clemons first felt something wrong with the knee March 29 while doing stretching exercises between games of a doubleheader against Cincinnati St. Xavier. The initial diagnosis was an injury to the medial collateral ligament.
Porta said Clemons “ran like a deer” in Friday’s 4 2 victory over Noblesville (Ind.) but then felt the knee give way again Saturday at Henderson County. He is scheduled to have surgery next week.
“He’s not only our best player but our hardest worker,” Porta said. “It’s hard losing him but in my three years at St. X this is the deepest team we’ve had.”
Ranked No. 2 in the state, the Tigers were 13 5 entering Thursday’s home game against No. 7 Male. They will face No. Sunday at U of L’s Jim Patterson Stadium.
All Star tryouts this weekend at Georgetown
Tryouts for the Kentucky All Star senior and junior basketball teams will be this weekend at Georgetown College.
Tryouts are open to the public. Admission is $5.
The senior All Stars will face Indiana on June 13 at Transylvania University in Lexington and June 14 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Dates for the junior games have not been set.
Mr. Basketball Quentin Snider of Ballard and Miss Basketball Ivy Brown of LaRue County already have clinched spots on the Kentucky squads and will wear the No. 1 jerseys.
